James Harris, due to his achievement in discovering Elements 104 and 105, began to receive various awards. He was granted an honorary Ph.D. Huoston-Tillotson College because of his discoveries. He also received a Scientific Merit Award from the Mayor of Richmond, California and a Certificate of Merit from the Black Dignity Science Association.
James Harris also began gaining memberships to many associations and societies. These associations and societies include such groups as the National Society of Black Chemists and Engineers and the Nuclear Target Society. He also became a member of the American Chemical Society, the AEC Transplutonium Program, and Alpha Phi Alpha.
